What do Gaskets Do?

At Crosstown Motors in Littleton, NH, we want our customers to be informed vehicle owners, and we strive to provide them with useful information that helps them care for their vehicles. Your car's gaskets serve an important purpose. They form a barrier between at least two surfaces to keep gases and fluids from escaping.

There are many types of gaskets. The most common type of gasket is a head gasket, but there are also exhaust manifold gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets. Although gaskets can be made of a variety of materials, the most common material used for gaskets is multi-level steel. Copper and rubber are also used for gaskets.

If you notice bubbling, gurgling, or foaming coming from under the radiator, then you should have your vehicle inspected because there could be a hole in a gasket. If you notice a substance that looks like mayonnaise when you are checking the oil, then it could mean that a gasket is failing.
